About Us:
Arete Chess Academyᵀᴹ is owned, operated, and run by young adults who are enthusiastic about teaching youth and helping them develop their abilities. We have seen firsthand how developing one’s chess skills often leads to an increase of confidence and excitement in life.
In Greek, Arete means excellence, virtue, or the fulfillment of potential. We chose this word to describe our chess camp for at least two reasons. First, because we strongly believe that our services will enable others to develop their abilities to play chess on a greater level than they have previously; and second, because chess itself leads to the cultivation of an abundant and virtuous life.
Chess is certainly only one among many ways that children can reach their potential, but is perhaps one of the most rewarding. While it is not an athletic sport, it does require patience, practice, focus, and good sportsmanship. It teaches humility and resilience in the face of defeat. It also provides an opportunity for individuals of all ages to build lifelong friendships.
Overall, we have little doubt that chess can be an avenue for enjoyment and fulfillment that they might not have otherwise, and we are excited to have the chance to teach a life changing skill to the students and youth in your organization.
About the Founder:
My name is Jonathan Williams. I started Arete Chess Academy. I enjoy playing, teaching, and coaching chess.
When I was in 7th grade my parents signed me up for a summer chess camp. I knew how to play, but I didn’t know how to play well. I soon found myself being beaten by children half my age or younger. By the end of that week, I had found a challenging, rewarding and fun talent that I did not know I had. That was the launching point from where I began my chess journey and go on to compete in every scholastic and USCF tournament I could sign up for. Since then, chess has been a lifelong passion and way of building relationships with others I would not have met otherwise. Chess has been instrumental in helping me develop self-confidence and personal growth. I am a strong believer that it can help others do the same.
